More recently, Eugen Dombois has encouraged lutenists to “enrich your experience with the lute” by publishing three different frettings named by the size of their 5ths rather than the size of the commas, showing both chromatic frets:

While discussing Baroque guitar fretting, Michael Lorimer reminds us that, “Players of any era who want their music to sound as sweet as possible tune the minor thirds sharp, and the major thirds flat, of Equal Temperament,” finding the 699¢ particularly elegant.25

On a modern single course classic guitar, different frettings offer a wealth of harmonic color not available to the Equal Tempered instrument, while the modern use of “broken” frets gives players much more freedom in choosing chromatic notes. Here are a few examples of the discontinuous frets of 1/4-comma Meantone and 1/6-comma Meantone on Novatone’s SwitchBoards:
